Learning mode is one of the best features of a universal remote control which easily helps you to set it up without programming. Basic remotes won’t get these features but if you have the models with some advanced features, you can use and simply learn the functions from the original TV or any other household remotes. There are many benefits to learning the functions of the original device. In this post, we’ll look at this deeply. stay tuned.
This is only possible when your original remote control is fully functioning. Always try to learn the features when you buy the new third-party remote control.
Before that, what is learning of a remote?
It is simply copying the features of the remote control to another one that can be used as the original controller. The Infrared signal emitted by one device copies to the other one and registers all the functions in the circuit board memory.
Benefits of learning function of a universal remote
- Copy the exact features:- It allows you to copy all of the features and functions from the original remote control
- No codes needed:- You won’t worry about finding the universal remote codes
- Get rid of complex programming:- Almost basic remote provides simple pairing methods, but some models have complex programming instructions. You won’t worry about that.
- Eliminate partial programming:- Sometimes, when you program using the exact code, the remote gets partially programmed. Not all the functions work. In such cases, when you try learning from the original remote, you can avoid the issue.
Comparison of Universal Remote Programming Methods
Method | Description | Pros | Cons |
---|---|---|---|
Code Entry | Entering manufacturer codes to program the remote | Quick setup | May not work for all devices |
Auto Search | Remote scans for the correct code automatically | No need to find codes manually | Takes longer time |
Learning Mode | Remote learns commands from an existing remote | Works with any device | Requires the original remote |
How to use learning mode in a universal remote control
There may be a learning button on the remote control. In some models, you see the code search button. I think the learning key is with some old-model remote controls.
Step 1: Point the remotes to each other
This is the first step. Since we copy the functions through the IR sensors, make sure to keep the remotes point each other and be sure the IR emitters are opposite. Just look at the image below
Ensure there is a sufficient charge on the batteries of both the remotes.
Step 2: Select the device
In the universal remote, there may be some device category keys since it can work with all of them. There may be a TV, button, DVD, audio device, etc. If you are learning from the original TV remote, press the TV button on your universal remote control.
Step 3:- Enter learning mode
This is very important. Press and hold the learning key on the remote control until the LED blinks twice. In some remotes, rather than the learning key, you can see the code search button or magic key.
When you press and hold on to it for less than 5 seconds, the LED starts to blink and turns off.
Step 4: Send the IR signals.
Press the power button of the original TV remote control so it starts to send the IR signals. The learning mode on the UR remote starts to receive all of the signals and stores them on the memory circuit. Press the number 975.
Step 5: Learn the function
After entering codes 9, 7, and 5, we can start pressing the key on the universal remote to learn the function from the original remote control.
Do not learn the power function first. It is better to copy the power function at last. first, press the basic functions like changing the channels, volume up, down, menu, mute, color key functions, etc.
Here is the important thing that yo need to consider. When you copy the function from the original remote, you have to press the same function keys.
For example, If you are copying the mute function, after pressing the MUTE button on the universal remote, press the same MUTE button on the original device. Then the function will be copied to it.
Finally, learn the power function.
If you only need some functions like the basic things like changing the channels, volume control, etc, you can only learn these functions. All other features will not copy. This means those keys will not work.

Save the learning
This is the final step. Once you copy the features you want, press and hold the magic button until the LED blinks. This means that the changes are saved to the destination remote.
Done! now your device is ready to use with the TV or any device you learned.
FAQ
Why I can’t see the magic button?
Your remote may be a newer one. So, don’t worry. Use the code search button at the top instead of the magic button.
Can I only learn the basic functions like volume control, channel control, and power functions?
Yes! But is is not recommended. If you want to perform other functions like Menu options such as mode changing, output change, etc, you should learn all the functions exactly from the source device. If the original remote is OK and healthy, it is ok to copy the only wanted functions so that we can simply avoid the functions that may occur when the finger touches the keys automatically.
