To properly program a universal remote, you not only need the correct universal remote codes but should find out the correct model number of the remote control. Based on the code list version, every third-party remote may have a unique code with respect the the brand. Here, in this case, we call them as revision number and code list version number. For the RCA universal remote, it refers as the revision number, and for the GE remote, it is called the CL code list number. There are many revision numbers available for RCa, but CL3, CL4, CL5, and CL6 are the code list versions available for the GE universal remote.
In this post, I am going to show you how to find out the revision or code list version of a universal remote control.
How to get a revision/code list version of a universal remote?
First of all, locate the battery compartment of the universal remote control.
Turn the remote, and then remove the cap of the battery compartment. Then remove the batteries from there.
There is a label glued inside that has the product details like the remote control model number, brand name, country of origin, revision number, or the code list version number, etc.
The revision number is the alphanumeric digit, and note down it.
Finding the proper remote codes for the revision number
After finding the revision number or code list version, we have to find the universal remote code for the device type and brand. Suppose, your remote has the revision number R271U1, you have to find the remote code for your TV (or any other device) for that specific revision number. Let’s say you have an LG TV, find the universal remote code for the LG TV brand for the remote with revision number R271U1.
You can either get the code from this website, or get it from the code booklet of the remote that obtained when you bought the remote. Additionally, get the codes from the official web portal of the remote.
Apply the code: programming
Next, apply the code to your remote for the device to be made compatible. We call it as programming. This is a simple process. Before proceeding, make sure the batteries have sufficient charge. To simplify the pairing, or want to retry with another code, first write down 5 – 10 universal remote codes on paper. This could be a – or 5-digit code.
Turn on the device that you want to program for. For example, TV, home theater, DVD player, etc.
Get into the programming mode:- There is a setup button on the remote. Press and hold on it until the LED light on the remote turns ON.
Then we need to press the device type button. Let’s say, we are programming for the TV, then press and release the TV button on the remote.
The LED will turn Off, then enter the 4 or 5-digit code through the number keys.
That’s enough. The next step is to test the remote on your device.
What should you do when the code does not match?
This is a common issue that occurs while pairing a universal remote control. But it need not worry. You have to double-check both the revision number as well as the universal remote codes for the device category and the brand. For example, you may use the code for the DVD player instead of your TV for the particular branded device. So, check that first.
Then check the revision number. The code only works with the correct remote code. If one code is not working, I recommend you to try with another code from the list. Before trying this, just reset your remote is possible. You may not find a reset button, but you can simply soft reset by removing the batteries from it for 1 or 2 minutes. Then re-insert. Try programming with another code from the list.
carefully observe the response that is given by the remote code like lighting the LED bulb, turning it off in the proper step, etc.
If this doesn’t work, you can apply the automatic code search method to pair the remote. In this method, by applying the steps, the remote control will send the code signals to the device and set it based on the correct response from the device.
